Bridging to Self-Sovereign Identity

How to enable the Enterprise to move from existing centralized or federated identity access management systems to a decentralized model was the topic in the 15th Vienna Digital Identity Meetup*.  In both the private and public sector the capital investments in IAMs runs into the billions of dollars, for decentralized identity models to make serious inroads in this sector providing a of roadmap or transition journey that both educates and enables the enterprise to make the move is required.

In our 15th event we discussed the routes  being taken by Raonsecure and IdRamp.  Both Raonsecure and IdRamp are being successful in making the introduction of  decentralized identity concepts to the market and helping their customers start on this transition journey.

Alex David (Senior Manager, Raonsecure) started with brief update on the forces driving decentralized identifiers in the Korean market and then presented Raonsecure’s Omnione product.  In keeping with the theme on the ‘bridging’ to bring DIDs and VCs into the market Alex went through six different pilots,  and proof of concept solutions that Omnione has implemented in the Korean market.  These include working with the Korean Military Manpower Association on DID based authentication and issuing of verifiable credentials (VCs) to Korean veterans to the use of DIDs for driverless car identification in an autonomous vehicle pilot in Sejong, Korea.

Mike Vesey (CEO, IdRamp) introduced IdRamp and discussed their core objective of bringing DIDs and VCs into the enterprise market by creating a ’non-frightening’ educational path to adoption of decentralized identity.  IdRamp is a session based transactional gateway (no logging) to all things identity, providing common service delivery and compliance and consent management across identity platforms.  They are not an identity service provider but resemble more closely as a digital notary in the generation of decentralized identifiers and verifiable credentials.  The service integration capability of IdRamp was demonstrated with the use of employee issued verifiable credentials to authenticate to a enterprise service (in this case a Zoom session login).

Finally, the seed of an upcoming event was planted.  As with any new technology market breaking through the ’noise’ of everyday life is very difficult.  This is no different for DIDs and VCs.  You will have to watch the recording to get the topic….
